We recently spoke with Kim Macy to learn more about her new role as Vice President and leader of the South Central Engineering and Testing group. We asked her about her background, what she enjoys about working at Braun Intertec in this new role, and advice she has for those just starting their career.
What is your current role at Braun Intertec?
I lead the engineering and testing group for the South Central Region and am a Vice President. We have more than 200 employee-owners in our group who strive daily to be the consultant of choice for our clients. Additionally, I serve as a liaison with our Upper Midwest Engineering and Testing group, and our corporate headquarters.
What is your professional background?
I have an unusual background within this industry. I have 25 years of on-the-job training, hold eight NICET certifications across three disciplines, am a certified Design-Build Professional, and maintain a variety of other industry certifications. Building teams with strong technical skills and business acumen is a passion of mine.
What interested you about your profession?
I love the variety of challenges and opportunities each day brings. Working across multiple disciplines has afforded me a unique perspective and approach to the work we do. Being involved with many forensic investigations has also made the quality of service we provide and the technical level of our staff very important to me.
What is the most rewarding part of what you do at Braun Intertec?
The perpetual forward motion we have at Braun Intertec. We are constantly learning new things, improving and growing our firm. It is very rewarding to mentor individuals and watch their skill sets increase and expand as they mature within our firm.
What is your favorite thing about working at Braun Intertec?
Braun Intertec is an excellent firm that genuinely cares about our clients and employees. These attributes provide us with near limitless opportunities and promotes collaboration at the highest levels, not only with our staff but with our clients as well.
What technical specialty/service(s) do we offer that you feel differentiates Braun Intertec from other firms?
Because of our culture, we attract some of the brightest minds and experienced folks in the industry which greatly deepens our technical expertise. Additionally, we offer many specialty services which provide our clients continuity throughout their projects. Some of our specialty services include drilling, non-destructive testing, building and structure sciences, forensic investigations, and more.
What is your approach to client problem solving?
Listen first, ask questions, be sure you understand the issues, then offer solutions for discussion. Too often, consultants want to provide their answer before they truly understand the client’s particular circumstances. Each client’s needs, financial constraints, and project is different; it’s important to understand what these are.
What traits do you look for in your team members?
We are always looking for people who will thrive within our culture – the best of the best – because we tend to have high expectations. Do you have a piece of advice for someone entering your profession or who is just starting at Braun Intertec?
Work hard and have fun! Leverage the expertise of your peers and mentors; don’t be afraid to ask questions or tell someone you don’t know the answer (but you’ll be happy to find out). Always strive to improve yourself. If you do those things, you will likely be successful.
What are some of your hobbies or things you like to do outside of work?
I love to scuba diving, underwater photography, and spending time with loved ones. Most weekends are spent at the lake with scuba students, fellow instructors, and close friends. I also enjoy landscaping and being outdoors.
