Ryan Venable: Senior Vice President, South Central Engineering and Testing

We recently spoke with Ryan Venable to learn more about his new role as Senior Vice President and leader of our South Central Engineering and Testing group. We asked him about his background, what he enjoys about working at Braun Intertec and his new role, and his advice for those just starting their career.

What is your current role at Braun Intertec?
I lead the South Central Engineering and Testing group. The Engineering and Testing division is spread across two geographic areas – South Central and Upper Midwest. While my team and I oversee the South Central region of our division, which includes our operations in Iowa, Kansas/Missouri, Louisiana and Texas, Sean Swartz is responsible for the Upper Midwest region. Due to my previous small, medium and large firm management experience and focus on operational excellence I also work on several strategic initiatives and am a member of our mergers and acquisitions team.

What interested you about your profession?
In college I initially was studying civil engineering, but during my college internship I acquired a lot of business experience working with international sales and I found that business development and operations was a better fit for me. But ultimately, I like managing people and managing the science. I’m a business person who understands all the technical aspects of what we do and why we do it, and I’m able to translate that from our professional staff to any type of client.

What’s your favorite aspect of your role and what you get to do at Braun Intertec?
I like facing any challenge, but what’s most rewarding to me is leading strategic initiatives that positively impact our employee-owners, holds people accountable and better scales our firm for continued growth.

Speaking of continued growth, what has it been like to watch Braun Intertec expand its operations and services throughout the South Central region over the past several years?
Over the last 15 years of my career I’ve consistently been brought on to help with strategic, sustainable growth. Braun Intertec has experienced a lot of growth these past few years, especially in Texas and the Gulf Coast. Being able to see the growth of our firm and bringing on talented employee-owners who in turn help us better serve our clients – that’s what I live for. I’m a relationship driven person, so for me it’s all about the relationships I forge with people. Whether its dealing with staff, clients or my counterparts on the senior leadership team – that’s why I go to work every day.

What do you think makes Braun Intertec unique compared to other consulting and testing firms?
For a company of our size, we still maintain a family-like atmosphere. Our size allows us to be more nimble and flexible, but still maintain that personal touch with our staff. As we continue to grow I know that our leadership team is focused on maintaining our employee-owned culture and hiring people who will continue to foster that kind of atmosphere.

What’s a unique service Braun Intertec offers that you feel differentiates our firm?
I lead our engineering and testing group, but we also have an unbelievable environmental practice that offers great value to our clients. When you add in building sciences and our other construction related services, we truly are a total solutions provider – and not many firms can say that. With most companies, our clients may need to stop at two or three firms to meet their various needs, whereas we can bring in a team on a project of any size or complexity and provide a complete package of services to our clients.

What traits do you look for in your team members?
We look for someone who can collaborate and has a team player mentality. If someone is relationship-driven, has a high level of integrity and looks out for their peers, then they will find success. We can always develop technical experience and provide training, so if someone is motivated to do better and learn more – they will do really well at Braun Intertec.

What advice do you have for someone just starting at Braun Intertec?
Braun Intertec has a lot to offer its employee-owners. We provide opportunities that are unique to most firms because we truly care about our employees and want them to continue to grow and develop in their careers. So, my advice would be to approach things with an open mind and patience and take advantage of the opportunities we offer, because they are truly unique.

What do you like to do with your free time?
I have many hobbies, so I do pretty much anything you can imagine. I love adventure, so if it involves heights or speed or seeing something new for the first time – that’s what I live for. I’ve been privileged to travel to many states and countries, so any time I find something new it’s refreshing to be a part of it.
