We recently spoke with Austin Heider to learn more about his new role as Vice President and Director of the South-Central Environmental Investigation and Remediation division. We asked him about his background, what he enjoys about working at Braun Intertec and his new role, and what he looks for in his team members.
What is your professional background?
I started off my professional career with a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Geoscience from Texas A&M University. After graduating, I started my professional career at Arcadis. Then in 2012, I joined W&M Environmental which was acquired by Braun Intertec in 2018. Throughout my career in the environmental consulting business I’ve specializes in spill response management, complex site assessment, remediation, and risk-based closures.
What interested you about your profession?
I was first introduced to geosciences in a high school class. Since then, I have been fascinated by the different disciplines that play a part of the environmental consulting world. One of the most interesting aspects of my profession is how geology, biology, chemistry, and other disciplines can play a role in developing a strategic approach to the assessment and cleanup of impacted facilities.
What is your favorite aspect of your role or the most rewarding part of what you do at Braun Intertec?
The most rewarding part of my role is to see the growth and accomplishments of my fellow employee owners. I enjoy mentoring others and it is always rewarding to see a new team member come onboard, expand their knowledge, increase their skill set and succeed at their job.
What is your favorite thing about working at Braun Intertec? What do you feel makes it unique
Our company is 100% employee owned and has the cultural feel of a family. We have several employee-owner events throughout the year including awards ceremonies, and ESOP celebrations. These events acknowledge and reward our employee owners for their hard work and successes.
What is your approach to client problem-solving?
My approach to client problem-solving starts with building a trusting relationship with my clients and then understanding their needs and wants. I always focus on asking the client what they want to get out of the project and then we closely develop a plan together – I have found that to be the most efficient and effective approach to solving their needs.
What qualities do you look for in your team members?
At Braun Intertec we look for someone who is driven, loyal, honest, passionate, a problem-solver, and not afraid to take on new challenges.
What should new Braun Intertec employees know about working here? Do you have a piece of advice for someone entering your profession?
Braun Intertec invests in its people and believes in sustainable growth that allows our employee owners to advance in their careers. One bit of advice I have for someone entering the profession is to not shy away from new or unfamiliar opportunities that come up. Always find ways to expand your skill set and knowledge of the business when given the opportunity.
What fuels your passions outside of work?
My family – I coach my two daughters’ softball teams and enjoy developing their skills. It is fulfilling to see them in action when they apply those skills in a game. When I am not coaching my daughter’s softball teams, I enjoy a good fishing or hunting competition with my wife.
What are some of your hobbies or favorite activities outside of work?
I enjoy spending time with the family, whether we are going to the Astros game or taking a much-needed vacation to Disney World. I enjoy anything related to being outdoors, hunting, fishing, golfing, camping, and hiking.
