Braun Intertec completed a soil removal Response Action for two wastewater sumps at a jewelry manufacturing facility that were found to have elevated levels of arsenic, cadmium, copper and/or silver.

During affected property assessment activities, surface soil at two areas of concern were found to contain metals (arsenic, cadmium, copper, and/or silver) at concentrations exceeding the critical protective concentration level (PCL) for residential use. Because of building renovation plans at the facility, the Client opted to proceed with a soil response action, via a Self-Implementation Notice (SIN), prior to submittal of the Affected Property Assessment Report (APAR).  With a Texas Commission on Environmental Quality-approved Class 3 groundwater designation, critical PCLs for the metals of concern were established as equal to the Texas Risk Reduction Program (TRRP) Tier 1 residential total soil combined (TotSoilComb) PCLs for a 0.5-acre source area.

The soil response action was initiated in August 2018 and completed in October 2018.  Affected surface soil was removed by excavation, profiled, and disposed at a nearby landfill. Soil confirmation samples were collected for laboratory analysis and additional over-excavation was conducted to fully remove the affected soil. The APAR for the operational portion of the facility was submitted in November 2018 and approved by the TCEQ in January 2019. Following a review of the Response Action Completion Report, the TCEQ issued a “no further action” letter in April 2019.
