The Mayo Clinic opened the Richard O. Jacobson Building, a $188 million proton beam treatment center in Rochester, MN in mid-2015. The facility is located in downtown Rochester, just northeast of the Rochester Methodist Hospital. The 110,000-square-foot facility is designed to allow for future growth and is fully integrated into Mayo Clinic’s three-site cancer program.

We were involved in several phases in the construction of the Richardson O. Jacobson Building. We partnered with Ellerbe Becket, now practicing as AECOM, to provide a geotechnical report for the main facility. Excavations for the building included approximately 20 feet of rock excavation and the lowest level of the building was submerged below the water table.

Other phases of the project included providing Mayo Facilities Project Services with construction materials testing, special inspections, and waterproofing inspections for the new tunnels connecting the Richard O. Jacobson Building to two other existing Mayo Clinic buildings. We implemented construction materials testing services on the relocation of an on-site oxygen tank, and precondition surveys and vibration monitoring for Construction Issue 1 (Mass Excavation) of the building in a joint venture between Knutson Construction Services and Gilbane Building Company.

With construction of this state-of-the-art medical center complete, the Richard O. Jacobson Building is home to some of the most advanced cancer treating technologies in the world. The Mayo Clinic estimates around 1,240 patients will be treated annually at this new facility. The success of the project marked a strong partnership between our team, Mayo Clinic’s management and the project team.
