Site Description

W&M Environmental (now Braun Intertec) provides environmental consulting services for NuStar’s corporate remediation division. The Pipeline Spill Release received was identified and reported to the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality (NDEQ). The site was a rural area with trees, grasses, and a dry stream.

Project Details

Petroleum products release discovered in a dry stream channel in November 2012. Spill estimated at 2,500 gallons of diesel fuel and gasoline. Our team and our Nebraska-based subconsultant, RDG provided oversight of remedial excavation activities and coordination with Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality (NDEQ).  The goal of the pipeline company was to remove all traces of petroleum products with the intent of obtaining a “no further action” determination. Remedial activities included soil treatment through land application, soil and groundwater sampling, a receptor survey, discharge permitting, effluent sampling, site restoration oversight, and report preparation. A total of 9,700 cubic yards of soil was excavated during the remediation process. Of that, approximately 5,600 cubic yards was treated through land application, and 4,110 cubic yards of treated soil was transported to the local landfill as a “special waste” for use as alternative daily cap material. Soil deemed unsuitable for land application treatment was transported to the local landfill for disposal.  The pipeline owner is currently awaiting response to its request for site closure.

The Solution

We worked with our Nebraska-based subconsultant to obtain a no further action determination from the NDEQ on a rural pipeline spill into a dry stream. Our team worked closed with RDG and the Client to assure a smooth process with the NDEQ and a no further action determination.
