Decoding Vibration Thresholds: When Do Buildings Crack?

By Braun Intertec

Construction generated vibrations are necessary for the completion of many projects, but can often be a nuisance. Whether it’s meeting compaction requirements, demolition, or installing piling for earth retention or deep foundations, these vibrations cause headaches for project neighbors and the construction team and may result in litigation. Futhermore, there is no comprehensive vibration guideline for easy reference regarding vibration limits.

In this webinar, we will discuss some of the most common vibration limits used in specifications both locally and globally to better understand the risks associated with construction vibrations. We will also review some cases where damage did occur, and how those thresholds relate to the damage observed.

Watch below as Ren Keyport, PE, and Cody Bain, PE, break down the complex vibration threshold recommendations in common use and practical applications of these thresholds to limit structural effects.

  • Different vibration types and how they affect structures
  • Why vibration frequency is critical and often overlooked
  • Soil consolidation, the real threat
